Short Fiction: What's Hot?by Kevin Arnold and Kathie Isaac-Luke |
|
If there seems to be a consistent recent trend in the Short Story, it is that
it's getting shorter. Our workshop will begin with a quick review of earlier
"traditional" short stories. Participants are requested to read two
classics: Franz Kafka's A Hunger Artist and Tillie Olsen's As I Stand Here
Ironing, each of which is available on the Internet.
Then we'll go into more contemporary trends including ways the genre is
changing and what is getting published now.
Most of the workshop will be devoted to participant work, through in-class exercises. After the brief discussion, we'll guide you through an exercise that could just become your next story. A short amount of time will be devoted to marketing the short story. Participants might examine www.duotrope.com in advance. Limited to first 12 signups
