Portals and Passageways

What does it mean to slip into a novel? How does this change when the novel is set in another world?
This workshop will explore the genre of Magical Realism (along with a few other types of speculative fiction) through a specific lens: opening passages. Looking at the first pages of Marquez’s  One Hundred Years of Solitude, Asimov’s Foundation, Calvino’s The Baron in the Trees, Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go, and others, we will discuss how magic works in a novel, the features of an effective opening passage, and attempt to craft our own.
