Refining Your Voice WorkshopbyKevin Arnold |
|
The lifelong problem for most writers is establishing their own voice on
the page. Even before the critical questions of how the story is told
(first person, third person limited, third person omniscient, etc.) a
writer has to answer whether the voice is best implemented in poetry, short
stories, novellas or novels or even the new worlds of Facebook entries, blogs,
and Tweets.
I’ll ask participants to Email me either a poem or a double-spaced half-page —a few paragraphs of prose, even a Facebook entry or a blog. I’ll forward the work to the group so we can study the work ahead of time. One of my favorite metaphors for re-writing is the way the dentist comes in after the hygienist is through with you and examines every surface and picks at every crevice. Do all the hygienist work ahead of time—scrub your work till it sparkles and we’ll do our best to bring it to the next level.
